Husband of Matilda Louise Sutherland.

"Bud" French was the youngest child of Confederate Veteran Joseph Henry French of Belfast, Ireland, and Eliza Jeanette Howard of New Orleans, LA. He was just a toddler when his carpenter father was killed when he fell from the roof of the building he was working on. His mother then returned to New Orleans with him and his older siblings William and Susan. She remarried to Mr. John Owens, a native of England, and had several children for him in Algiers.

"Bud" grew up in Algiers and went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a brakeman, then a conductor on the "Sunset Limited." He became Chairman of the Order of Railway Conductors and served on several railroad committes.

He served one term in the Louisiana State Legislature (1904-1908) as Representative of Algiers (15th Ward of New Orleans.) He had some child-labor and railroad-safety laws enacted. He was a Regular Democrat and a close friend of New Orleans mayor Martin Behrman, in whose honor he named his youngest son.

"Bud" French died of cancer 30 Sep 1930 at the age of 63.
