Thomas Jefferson McFarland was the son of Gazaway Davis McFarland & Mary Poe. He was born in Green City, Alabama and lived for a short time in Jackson. On the 24th of Aug, 1864 he married Miss Caroline Paulene Jayne of Brandon,Mississippi... one of the trio of beautiful sisters.

In the death of Dr. McFarland the South has lost one of her most noble sons. He belonged to the old school aristocracy, and in his Cherterfieldian and courtly manners won many friends. He graduated from Tulane Medical School and served his country in the Confederate Army as a surgeon. After peace was declared, he moved to Texas. He was eminently successful in his chosen profession and made medicine his life long study. The latter part of his very active life he served Texas as quarantine officer for 20 years or more.

He was a frequent visitor to his only brother, Andrew J. McFarland and sister Annie, in Copiah County, and his devotion to them was very touching and beautiful.

He was a devoted Christian and greatly delighted in conversing on spiritual things. His faith in God was supreme and now the battle is fought and the victory won.
