Born in Sweden, Gust Wictor's birth name was Gustav Magnus Wictorin. He arrived at Ellis Island on December 20, 1920, aboard the S/S Drottningholm, and became a citizen on September 3, 1926, changing his name to Gustav Magnus Victor. He joined the United States Army (using the name Gustav Magnus Wictor) on November 27, 1925, and was serving with the United States Army Air Force in 1941, stationed at Hickam Field when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan. Gust's wife, Ella, and his two step-daughters, Lorna and Gwen Smith, "hunkered down" in their government quarters during the attack while Gust went off to the flight line to defend the base. Later on he served in the Pacific Theater, and participated in the Battle for Midway (June 4-7, 1942) and the Solomon Island Campaign (August 7, 1942 to March 28, 1943), receiving the Bronze Star. Achieving the enlisted rank of Master Sergeant, he was appointed as a Warrant Officer in the United States Army Air Corps on August 22, 1943. He retired in 1956 after 30 years and 3 months in the service. Thereafter he and Ella retired to Lake Tahoe.
