Henry J. Brook Dies At Home In Goodland
Henry J. Brook, age 69, prominent business man of Goodland, died at the family home on South Newton Street, at 2:00 O'clock A. M. on Wednesday, October 23, 1957.
Mr. Brook had been in failing health for the past three years and was seriously ill for the past sixteen and one-half weeks.
He was the son of the late Peter and Barbara Valliquette Brook. He was born January 9, 1888 in the Brook home.
With the exception of a year in the West, he spent his entire life in Goodland. He attended and was graduated from the Goodland Schools and studied floriculture and forestry at Purdue University.
He was interested and very active in the affairs of the community and served as Assistant Cashier of the First National Bank of Goodland and later as Cashier of the State Trust and Savings Bank. He was elected to the office of Clerk-Treasurer of the Town of Goodland and held this office for twenty-two years. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Goodland-Grant Township Public Library Board for a number of years, resigning because of ill health.
His avocation and hobby of gardening and specializing in floriculture developed into a business and the Brook Gardens were established. To this was added a landscaping service in which he was active until his health failed.
Mr. Brook was a life-long member of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church where he served first as an Altar boy and then Sacristan and Trustee. He was also Secretary-Treasurer of the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Association which latter offices he held at the time of death. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society.
Survivors include a brother, Frederick J. Brook of Indianapolis; five sisters, Sister Mary Antonia of the Order of Sisters of St. Joseph, St. Joseph's Convent, Tipton, Indiana; also, Miss Clare E. Brook, Springfield, Illinois; Miss Etta Brook of Havana, Illinois; Miss Magdalene Brook of Indianapolis and Miss Rose Brook of Goodland.
The body may be viewed at the Crane Funeral Home, Goodland, after seven o'clock on Thursday night, October 24, with the Rosary Service at eight o'clock on Friday night. Last rites will be held at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church at 10:15 on Saturday morning, Oct. 26. Interment will be made in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Goodland.
