Miss Carolyn Belle McFarland, 79, a member of a Texas pioneer family, widely known piano & voice teacher, and one of the few remaining survivors of the 1886 hurricane which destroyed Indianola, died Sunday.
Death came to Miss Belle-- as she was known throughout the Port Lavaca in a local hospital where she was admitted for observation and treatment.
Miss McFarland was born at Hope, Texas on Nov 11, 1880, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.T. McFarland. Her mother had been born in Austin in 1842 while Texas was a young republic. The family moved to Indianola sortly after Miss McFarland's birth and her father became a very well known doctor in the Indianola-Port Lavaca area.

Belle studied piano at the Conservatory of Music in Chicago and voice under instruction of Oscar Sanger of New York. She was later associated as voice and piano teacher with schools in El Paso, Houston and Decatur, then opened studios in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fort Worth and Houston before returning to Port Lavaca where she made her home at the old family corner of South Guadalupe and Center Streets. She continued to teach a limited number of piano students in her home.

She was a member of Port Lavaca Pilor Club, serving as chaplain during the present club year, ahd also a member of the Christian Science Church.

Survivors are six nieces, Mrs Phil Kleas of Wharton, Mrs. Grace Morris of Victoria, Mrs. Wm. Cooper of Corpus Christi, Mrs Joe Hill of Cotulla, Mrs Norman Gibson of Robstown, Mrs. Pauline McFarland of Eagle Pass and three nephews, Clyde McFarland of Marfa, Van Haile of San Antonio and Sharpe McFarland of Houston.
