Longtime Maud resident Ann (Hill) Arnold passed from this life Tuesday, March 3, 2009 in Shawnee at the age of 82.
She was born Nov.8, 1926 in Haworth, Okla., to parents Hice William Hill and Wilma Hill.
The Arnold family moved to the Maud area just west of the Amerada Oil Company on the "Peters" lease in early 1941. Ann met her future husband Jack Arnold while attending Maud High School. They began courting in the fall of 1943 and were married on Feb. 26, 1944 in the Maud Methodist parsonage by the Rev. Darvis Parker. Their first night as newlyweds was spent at George's Hotel on Main Street in Maud. Their first apartment was a room in the Love Hotel in Purcell before moving to Seminole.
Jack worked for the Amerada Oil Company in Seminole while Ann raised their three daughters. In 1968 Jack and Ann purchased the Hardware Store in Maud from Ralph Jones. The Arnolds ran the Hardware Store for 10 years before they sold it to Chumley Waldroup. Jack returned to the oil patch and Ann went to work in 1980 for Maud Public Schools where she served as the Schools Dietician until her retirement in 2006. She had also worked for 25 years as a dental assistant to Dr. Huggler, D.D.S.
The Arnolds were always very active in their community. They served in the Athletic Booster Club, the Maud Round-up Club, the Maud Historical Society, the Maud Eastern Star, and the Maud Alumni Association. Through the years after their children were raised they also served as "Host Parents" to four different Foreign Exchange Students. Ann also served two terms as the district president for the Oklahoma School Food Association. She was a member of the Prairie Valley Home Demonstration Club, the State Dental Association and the Maud Elementary Parents Association. We will all remember Ann as the one we would call on to help with dinner for any fundraisers the community had. Ann and her husband Jack also had a great time at Christmas, because they always decorated their yard with tremendous Holiday Spirit. People would drive from surrounding towns just to see Jack and Ann's home adorned from the roof of the house to almost every square foot of their yard covered with Christmas lights and ornaments. Ann was also a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Maud.
Sadly Jack preceded Ann in death in 2000. Her parents, Wilma and Hice Hill; mother and father-in-law, Smith and Alice Arnold; one brother, Buzz Hill and one brother-in-law, Paul Waltman, also preceded Ann in death.
Ann leaves to cherish her memories three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and her husband Richard Northcott of Seminole, Sue and her husband Dan Herriman of Konawa, and Jacklyn "Jackie" and her husband Sam Acree of Shawnee; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joy Waltman of Maud, Jim and her husband Ray Garner of Maud, and Robbie and her husband Bob Jenkins of Norman; five grandchildren, Ran and his wife Christy Northcott, Jan and his wife Tammy Northcott, Sherri and her husband Tom Sockey, Eric Acree and Gavin and his wife Shay Acree; five great-grandchildren, Tad, Cody, Nikki, Riley, Haley, Levi, Jaxon and one great-grandchild is expected to arrive soon; Ann is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends.
A Celebration of Ann's life is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Maud High School Auditorium. Glen Williams will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud.
Casket Bearers will be Jan Northcott, Gavin Acree, Eric Acree, Stan Gregory, Tad Alford, Earl Jenkins, Bryan Jenkins, Britt Waltman, Richard Northcott, Dan Herriman, Sam Acree, Bob Jenkins, Ray Garner, Byron Waltman and Ran Northcott.
