PALMYRA - Richard L. (Dick) Begley, 84, of Palmyra, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. The Rev. Gerald Begley will officiate. Burial, with graveside military honors provided by the American Legion, will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Richard was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Palmyra to Richard Leo and Georgia Groteguth Begley.

He was married to Mildred Elwood on July 12, 1947, in Palmyra. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, David Begley and wife, Donna, of Longmont, Colo., Phillip L. Begley and wife, Monica, of Quincy, Ill.; grandchildren, Trestin, Clinton, Vanessa and Audra Begley; and a sister, Maureen Johnson of Palmyra.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Marion (Red), Donald and Maurice (Mose) Begley.

Richard was a self-employed contractor and builder for most of his life. He was a detail oriented craftsman who took great pride in his work. There are numerous homes that he built in Palmyra and the surrounding area that are a testimonial to his workmanship. He farmed for many years west of Palmyra. He later worked for Missouri Rural Electric and C.F. Industries in Palmyra.

He served in the United States Army, Company L, 393 Infantry during World War II, with campaigns in the Aleutians, Central Europe and the Rhineland, where he served under Gen. George Patton. He was issued the Missouri Veterans Award for World War II Service and was a life member of Boots-Dickson Post No. 174 of American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling, and was well known as "Yo-Ho" at the Pal Bowl Wednesday Night League. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Palmyra.
