Alexander was a member of Company F 1st Minnesota Cavalry during the Civil War∼A soldier who fought in the Indian Wars in Dakota Territory, 1862-1863. He was the son of Jarvis Alderman and Charlotte Grant. He married Betsy Jane Hall on Apr. 15, 1852 in Astabula, Ohio. Their daughter Ellan was born in Ohio 1853 and their daughter Orpha was born Minneapolis, Minn. in 1857.
He enlisted in Company F, Minnesota Mounted Rangers on Dec. 23, 1862. He was 31 years of age and a resident of Chatfield, Fillmore County, Minn. at the time he enlisted. He mustered out of the service on Dec. 2, 1863.

Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 4 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 31 Enlisted men by disease. Total 37.
