John Edward Hokanson was born September 8, 1918, at Browerville, Todd County, MN; he was the eighth of nine children of Karl and Anna (Lager) Hokanson, and the youngest of seven sons. He served in the US Army as a Private First Class during World War II. After the war he went into business with his brother Joseph as a painter in Minneapolis. Later he worked for the University of Minnesota.

On December 31, 1950, he married Grace Winifred Taylor [at the Covenant Church in Randall, Morrison County, Minnesota], who had just completed a term as a missionary in Oklahoma. They purchased a home in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, MN; John would spend the rest of his life there, and as a member of Brookdale Covenant Church. They had three daughters and two sons.

John was only 58 when he died unexpectedly on December 9, 1976. He had been preceded in death by both parents, and by an infant brother, Irvin. He was survived by Grace; daughters Charlotte and Carla Hokanson and Carolyn (Patrick) Stevens; sons Curtis and Charles; granddaughters Heather and Heidi Stevens; sisters Marie Borman and Dorothy Bengtson; brothers Harold, Lowell, Knute, Joseph, and Reuben Hokanson.

He was buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Grace was laid beside him in 2013.
