Bessie Iola Beams, 106, died Aug 6, 2003, at Aliceville Manor Nursing Home in Alabama. Graveside service is Friday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Akron, Ala. Mrs. Beams was born Jan. 20, 1897, in Lamar County, Ala. to the late Robert Scott Burkes and Mary Agnes Valls Burkes. She was a former nurses aide at Bryce Hospital. She was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Beams; son, James Monroe Burkes; seven brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her sons, Thomas Barney Beams of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Harvey Beams of Eutaw, Ala.; daughter, Ollie Mae Jacobs of Reform, Ala.; twin brothers Roy Burkes of Moundville and Troy Burkes of Tuscaloosa,; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.
