He was born Jan. 14, 1915, on the family farm near Uehling to Herman and Helena (Schole) Popken.
He grew up there, attending school district 60.
During most of his working years, he had a small farm east on the Scribner-Herman road. He also hired out to area farmers and had worked for Earl Fauss doing construction work.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Hooper.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Hooper, with Vicar Judy Johnson officiating.
There will be no public visitation.
