The son of Ellen Harrington Adams, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer William H. Foster, in District 1, Queen Anne's County, Maryland. His death certificate claims he was born in Pennsylvania.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty at Fort Marshall in Baltimore, Maryland, August 29, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with Battery B, 5th New York Heavy Artillery. Promoted to corporal October 15, 1862, he deserted at Baltimore's Fort McHenry to date February 26, 1863.


He afterward moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he married Susan Streaker and fathered Lillian E. (b. 01/19/76 - married a Bonham and a Shoff), Mary E. (b. 07/04/80 - married Frederic H. Hardy), and Mrs. Charles Selvert (b. ?). He died at his daughter Lillian's home from "acidosis - respiratory failure ?" with "carcinoma of soft neck" a contributing factor. His obituaries make no mention of military service.
