Per family researcher, Rebecca Ewing Peterson: I believe this to be a cenotaph. William and Thomas were born in Wise Co., Texas; Thomas in Mar. 1867. James was born in Wise Co, Texas. Then Tabitha was born. John was born in Sugarloaf, Arkansas in Feb 1870. And neither would have died in Fayette Co. because the family lived in Missouri in 1872 when Sarah was born and they didn't get to Fayette Co. until Estelle's birth in 1873. (you can follow this progression north by looking at their 1880 Census in Wheatland, Fayette, Illinois.)

I found a Mortality Schedule (required by federal law for anyone who had died during the year of a Federal Census) for both James and Tabitha. They both died in Sebastian Co. Arkansas, and James was born in Texas and Tabitha in Arkansas. Everything jives for James, but their dying on the same day seams to be a stonemason's error. According to the Schedule, Tabitha was 3 months old, not 9, and she died in May of 1870, 9 months after James. In fact, she was born AFTER he died.

Per family researcher Jim Lipsey: James and Tabitha Lipsey both died in Sugarloaf Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas of chronix flux (basically, dysentery). The 1870 Mortality Schedule for Sebastian County, Arkansas, lists persons who died during the year ending 1 Jun 1870. It lists their deaths and the following information: James, born in Texas and age 3 years, died in Aug 1869; and "Dehilla" (Tabitha), born in Arkansas, age 3 months, died in May 1870. Their parents, Samuel Francis Lipsey and Mary Pyatt Lipsey, erected a monument in Sidener Cemetery in St Elmo, Illinois, with both James' and Tabitha's names, along with their brother George C Lipsey's. With the above data, I have revised the birth and death dates of Tabitha. The monument in Sidener Cemetery in St Elmo, Illinois, lists Tabitha's death as 3 Aug 1869, age 8 months, 1 day.
