HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Alberta "Bertie" Altena, 81, of Hawarden died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with the family present at 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Bertie, the youngest of nine children, was born April 30, 1921, in Chatsworth, Iowa, to Richard and Gertrude (Haarsma) Timmer.

On Jan. 27, 1937, she married Herbert Schmidt of Rock Valley. They lived and farmed in the Rock Valley area. They had three children, Jean, Larry and Jimmy. Herbert passed away Sept. 29, 1953.

On Oct. 27, 1954, she married William Altena of Rock Valley. They made their home in Hawarden. They had two children, Linda and Randy. William passed away Aug. 10, 1968.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She worked as a waitress for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Hoffman of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Linda and her husband, Ray Miller of Akron, Iowa; a son, Randy Altena and his wife, Cathy of Craig, Mo.; five grandchildren, Cindy and her husband, Dave Hansen, of Spirit Lake, Brenda and her husband, Josh Gruber, of Denver, Iowa, Josh Altena and his wife, Joanna, of Kansas City, Mo., and Chelsa and Caitlin Altena, both of Craig, Mo.; eight great-grandchildren, Melanie Hoque, Josh Hansen, Matt Hansen, Michael Hansen, Katie Hansen, Drew Gruber, Elizabeth Henke and Nell Altena; four great-great-grandchildren, Mollie, Titon, Maddie and James; a brother, Henry "Hank" Timmer of Sioux Center, Iowa; and a sister, Harriet Newman of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

In addition to her husbands, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a special friend, Conrad Collins of Hawarden; two sons, Larry Schmidt and Jimmy Schmidt; a son-in-law, James Hoffman; a grandson, Danny Henke; three sisters, Jennie, Clara and Frances; and three brothers, Albert, Richard and John.
