Son of Elander NeSmith & Nancy Green. Born 6 February 1823 in Bulloch County, GA. The family moved to Thomas County, GA about 1840 where he married Eliza Jane McCree, daughter of Thomas McCree & Hester Graham, 2 August 1846. He and Eliza were married 47 years, issue: 8 children. Elijah was a farmer most of his life. During the Civil War he served in the 12th GA Militia Regiment, CSA. He was of the Christian faith. Elijah died 21 September 1894 in Thomas County, GA at age 71. Both he and his wife are buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Pavo, Thomas County, GA.
