Major Eugene Tweed

Major Eugene Tweed, 71, of 10 Mulberry St., died Saturday, Dec 19, in an Asheville hospital.

Tweed, a native of Clinchco, Va., had lived in Buncombe County since 1945. He was a retired weaver with Burlington Mills with 34 ½ years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He formerly was employed by the Inland Steel company in Wheelwright, Ky.

He attended Newbridge Baptist Church and was a member of VFW Post 891. He was a son of the late Rufus Fender and Lily Ruth Ferrell Tweed.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hamlin Tweed; a daughter, Brenda Gale Elkins of Candler; two sisters, Maxie Heide of Citra, Fla., and Margaret Saylor of Haleyville, Ala.; a brother Arlen Vernon Tweed of Fort Myers, Fla..; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. The Revs. Lee Roy Denton and David Coleman will officiate. Burial will be in West Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and at other time, will be at the residence.
