Frederick Henning "Fred" Bunth was born on May 10, 1842 in Lyby, Hörby kommun, Skåne län, Sweden, the son of Lars Christoffer Bunth (1803-1851) and Beata Ann (Jonsson) Bunth (1813- ). The family migrated to America when Fred was 2 years old, arriving in New York City. Shortly after that they were settled at Wheatland, Wisconsin.

When the American Civil War started, he enlisted in Company F, 4th Wisconsin Infantry and was honorably discharged in January 1863. He immediately re-enlisted and served in the Union Army until June 1866. During his service he was wounded several times.

Returning from the war, he was married on October 14, 1866 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Mary Jane Dyer (1847-1920), the daughter of William Dyer (1818-1866) and Diana D Downer (1817-1864).

A farmer, Fred and his family moved from Wisconsin to Iowa in 1870, and at the time of the 1880 census they were in Bremer County. Fred eventually gave up farming and moved to Waverly, where for some years he was the local representative of Page Gate and Fence Company.

Fred was 76 years old when he passed away at his Waverly home on August 9, 1918. Funeral Services were held at the Bunth home, and burial was in Harlington Cemetery.
