The oldest daughter of Philip & Elvira Davies, Hannah was born at Melgadw Farm, Sirhowy, Tredegar.
She married Thomas Samuel in 1870, and they had 21 children, most of whom were born at the Mountain Air Inn, Nantybwch, Tredegar.
Hannah made several trips to America, accompanied each time by many of her youngsters; two children, Howell & Jane were born in Pennsylvania in 1883 & 1885.
She was known as a warm-hearted woman full of spirit & character, and a generous friend to many a needy neighbour.

When not driving her horse & trap, Hannah, who was bi-lingual, could often be seen riding a horse with saddle-bags, across the nearby Welsh hillside to distant Llangynidr, probably to collect more new shoes from the Shoemaker.

Her oldest son, Charles & his family emigrated to Alberta, Canada. Two other sons (Philip & Tom) were killed in colliery accidents. Two more sons served in the Navy (Royal Navy & US Navy). Several of the remaining sons carried on the family tradition of farming.

In later years she was fondly known within the family as "Granny the Mount". Hannah died at the Mountain Air Inn in 1918, she is buried at Dukestown Cemetery, Nantybwch, Tredegar.
