Joyce L. Mantell, 72, of Tagliente Drive, formerly of Morrisville, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility.
She was born Jan. 23, 1939 in Geneva, N.Y., a daughter of DeVillo and Julia Spencer Webb, and received her education in Madison schools. On Aug. 19, 1955, Joyce married Frederick D. Mantell in Munnsville, N.Y. Theirs was a loving union of over 44 years until he predeceased her on January 18, 2000.
Joyce had been a nursing assistant at the Gerrit Smith Infirmary in Eaton from 1969 until 1972. She provided private duty nursing for several area residents from 1975 until 1984, and had also worked as a supervisor for the U.S. Census Bureau from 1979 to 1980.
Joyce was an active and dedicated member of the United Methodist Church in Peterboro, attended Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hamilton and was very involved in her community. She taught Sunday school for 10 years; was Chairperson of the Outreach Ministries from 1974 to the present time; was a "link" in the prayer chain; volunteered for the grocery cupboard, bake sales and Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for the needy and shut-ins. She was a loving and giving person who advocated for children and supported orphans in Peru and India, as well as at home. She also gifted local high school and college seniors. Above all, she was devoted to her family.
Surviving are her children, Penny A. and Stephen Hastings of Clermont, Fla.; Wayne F. and Kelly Mantell of Phoenix, N.Y.; Jeffrey L. Mantell and Chi Le of Canastota; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Raymond "Barry" Frank of Peterboro; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Doris Webb of Dallas, Ga.; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Michael D. Mantell predeceased her in 2007.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 from the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 2369 Lake Moraine Road, Hamilton, followed by interment in the Peterboro Cemetery.
