Ira was a son of Laura Eastabrooks and Col. James Dudley Humphrey. He had 2 siblings: Charles Dudley and Cornelia Eliza.

Ira married Esther Julia Rosseel on October 21, 1863 in Orwell, PA. They had four children: Josephine Rosseel, James Dudley, Colletta (possibly died at within month old), Eugene Gaylord and Cornelia Rosseel.

"In 1871 I.B. Humphrey is listed in the Bradford County Civil List as a Burgess....
...worked in partnership with his father,brother, and C. L. Tracy in the manufacture of fine boots and shoes noted for their strength and durability. They gained a wide reputation. The enterprise was 2nd in importance in the economy of Towanda in the 1880's. The following is taken from "History of the Towandas", by C.F. Heverly, published in 1886."

"......In 1882 a convenient, substantial structure was erected....It is of brick with an elevator running from bottom to top (five stories). The factory is supplied with all the facilities and latest improvements for manufacturing boots and shoes. The machinery is run by steam power. Special attention is given to the manufacture of mens', youths and boys' boots and women's, misses' and children's pegged shoes. Only first classwork is turned out, which for strength and durability has gained a wide reputation."

Ira invented the machine that stamps the size inside shoes.
