She was one of eight children born to William Hofmann and Katherine (Wolfe) Hofmann. In 1893 she married John C. Scherer. John Scherer died October 1921. They had three children: Clarence J. Scherer, of Petersburg Indiana, Irma Flocks of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Elsie Reynolds of Stewartsville, Indiana.
