Stephen a son of Richard Currey and Elizabeth Jones Currey, married Frances Moore in 1766. Tradition tells they eloped and it was not looked on favorably by either family. Frances was a daughter of Thomas Moore and Elizabeth Channing Moore.

Stephen and Elizabeth resided in Tarrytown, at Philipse Manor. After living there about 10 years, their home was entered by a band of robbers looking for money Stephen had received from selling a yoke of oxen. The story tells of Stephen being carried out into a field where he was brutally assaulted, his body thrust through by a bayonet and being left by a brook. The assailants returned to the Currey home and took the money from up in the ceiling. Later one of these infiltrators brought Stephen back to be cared for by Frances. Mr. Currey never fully recovered from his injuries. [Another account of his injuries states he fell from a high stoop.]

The family moved back to Cortlandtown. Stephen built a house near VanCortlandtville on the family land, which became known as the Pine Tree House.
