A native of Tazewell, Virginia, she had lived in Shipman since 1970, where she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston. A graduate of Tazewell High School she went on to work as a phone operator for the Bell System in suburban Maryland in the early 50's. During the late 60's she worked as a clerk for the Montgomery Ward Company in Bladensburg, Maryland. Upon moving to Virginia she went on to work as the first director of a Senior Center for adults in Shipman, Virginia. In her later years she worked as a cashier and merchandiser for the Lovingston IGA store until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Harvey James Elliott on August 15, 2005.
She is survived by her son, Harvey Wayne Elliott and wife, Marcia, of Mount Solon, Virginia; a sister, Ruth Chambers of Tazewell; and two grandchildren, Blair Hyde and her husband, Matt, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, Alison Munoz and her husband, Paulo, of Midlothian, Virginia; and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Phillip Munoz. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 2012, at the Mountain View Cemetery in Lovingston with the Reverend John P. Campbell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made in Gladys' memory to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911. Friends may call at the funeral home anytime Friday, August 17, 2012. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston, 434-263-4097.
