Nathan W. Truitt was living in Black Hawk, Caroll County, Miss., as recorded by the 1860 Census. Nathan Truitt was one of 78 officers and men to enlised on September 6, 1861,into the Black Hawk Rifles.

This company became Company G of the 22nd Mississippi Regiment. This unit saw service throughout Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. This regiment fought at Shiloh(Tenn), Snyder's Bluff, Fort Pemberton(Greenwood, Miss), Champions Hill, Kenesaw Mountain(GA), Peachtree Creek, Columbia(TN), Franklin, Nashville, and Bentonville(SC).

Nathan W. Truitt was a Sergeant and his records state he was seriouls wounded. Sgt. Nathan W. Truitt continued to serve with the 22nd Mississippi Regiment and was one of the only 27 men who were still with this unit after 4 years.
