Helen Marguerite (Walton) Giordano, 83, of S. Hackensack, NJ, formerly of Unity, Maine, passed away at Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ, February 8, 2002. She was born in Thorndike, October 9, 1918, the only child of Marshall N. and Sarah M. (Bucklin) Walton.
Marguerite, as family and friends in Maine knew her, graduated form Unity High School in 1936 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was an accomplished basketball player, captain of the high school basketball team and active in drama clubs and speaking competitions.
She graduated from Eastern Academy of Hairdressing and Beauty Culture in Bangor in 1941 and operated a beauty salon in Unity. She married Leighton E. Milliken on December 22, 1941, in Augusta. Leighton, an Army gunner and radio operator, was killed in World War II military action over Wizernes, France, on April 20, 1944. On April 11, 1945, Marguerite enlisted in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and served as a medical technician in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. She attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, was awarded the good conduct and World War II Victory Medals and is registered at the Women in Military service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. She became known as "Millie", a nickname derived from Milliken, her last name at the time. This nickname followed her into civilian life.
She married Roland Giordano on August 30, 1948, in Little Ferry, NJ. He was a Detective with the Bergen County Sheriff's Department. Roland died on November 22, 1983. Before retiring in 1986, she was a career dental assistant and office manager in Teaneck and S. Hackensack, NJ, for 39 years. She took care of her parents in their later years.
Survivors include many cousins, her longtime companion and friend, Haywood Morrow and his nine children. She often remarked they were like the family she never had.
Funeral services were held February 12 in Hackensack, NJ. Interment, with, military honors followed at Maple Grove Park Cemetery, Hackensack, NJ. (Published in the Republican Journal)
