Dr. Joseph B. Allen, who passed away at his home in Hillsboro, Thursday about noon, was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, September 19, 22. At the age of ten he was left an orphan and was taken into the family of a Deacon Hammond.

He received his medical education in New York, receiving his diploma in 1854. His professional actives began in Muncie, Ind. His next location was at Little York, Ill.,
After which he came to Hillsboro, Iowa in October 1854, where he has continuously lived until his death, April 6, 1911.

He was initiated into the Masonic order October 3 1856, and it is said, possibly with one exception, he was the oldest man in the Masonry in the state of Iowa. He was converted under the Evangelistic effort of the Rev. Winton of the Baptist church, and on January 16,1859, he was untied with the congregation, and was an efficient and faithful member until the disbandonment of the church in 1885.
He was married to Dorothy Hammond May 25, 1845. To this union four children were born, the only survivors of whom are R. E. Allen and Mrs. Nary Newbold, both of Hillsboro. The wife and mother died June 17, 1954. On October 18, 1855, the subject of this sketch was married to Sarah J. Kimes, who still survives him, and to this union four children were born, Senator W.S. Allen of Fairfield; Dr. L. B. Allen of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Emma Alton of Birmingham and Mrs. Belle Harper of Fairfield and Flora, who died in infancy.

He was a man widely known in south-eastern Iowa as a physician of large practice, being frequently called in consultation to neighboring town, always enjoying the confidence both of the profession and of the people. He was descended from a line of ancestors, including many illustrious names, among the number being his father, Colonel Joseph Allen, who distinguished himself ni the war of 1812. The late Senator Allison was also a relative of the deceased.
