In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes. Please note that his tombstone claims an 1841 birth year. Shown here is the birth date he reported in his pension, which may well have been false, given after the pension office began permitting applications for pension increases based on age. By that time, many men "realized" that they had been born earlier than they ever before had reported. However, one cannot be certain if that is the case here.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in York September 5, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 12 as a private with Co. I, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. On September 19, 1864, he suffered a serious wound to the left leg at the 3rd battle of Winchester (Opequon), requiring amputation six inches below knee (flap surgical technique). Complications arose and surgeons performed a second amputation higher up the leg the following March. He was discharged by surgeon's certificate to date May 20, 1865.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Ranck December 24, 1872, and fathered William H. (b. 04/10/74), Emma K. (b. 1878, d. 1880), and Walter Ranck (b. 05/20/84). In 1890, he was living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, and, in 1904, in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County.
