He was the son of Edward R. Avery and Elizabeth Boyd Avery.
On August 30, 1928 as Thaddeus C. Avery, he married Mildred Gilchrist at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Gilchrist at 518 Oak Street in Anaconda, Montana. The Rev. Harold Engxx of Helena who was a classmate of the bride at Intermountain College performed the ceremony.
They were the parents of two children.

On the 1930 census his occupation is listed as a Watchman at a metal manufacturing company.
