Jeremiah Keeler was a son of Jonah and Mary (Hoyt) Keeler born about 1754 in South Salem, Westchester County, New York, and died there on 25 May 1812. He married his second cousin Lydia Keeler, daughter of Silas and Abigail (Elmer) Keeler, on 2 Mar 1773 in Ridgebury, Fairchild County, Connecticut, and together they had at least six children: Jonah, Polly Ann, Sally, Rhoda, Nathan, and Lewis.
He served during the Revolutionary War as a private in the New York Militia, 4th Regiment.
