Clyde was born in Greenville County, S.C., he was the son of the late Jonah A. Smith and Jess S. Hill. Clyde was the owner of Smith Electric, a member of Taylors 1st Baptist Church, a member of Hugh Badger Sunday school class. He was a veteran of World War II where he was a scout with the 82nd Airborne, 508 Parachute Infantry C/O, and a POW captured on D-Day and a survivor of Dresden.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, M. Frances Smith; a daughter, Kay (Wayne) Ward of Travelers Rest; three sons, Dennis (Kathy) Smith of Taylors, Richard Smith of Taylors, and Michael (Debbie) Smith of Seneca; 12 grandchildren, Brian (Jerrilyn), Kevin (Katie) and Jason (Laura) Ward, Scott, Ryan, Adam, Angela, and Ashley (Mark) Murphy, Chelley, Lindsey, Jessica, and Sabrina Smith; 14 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Emmalie, Ashlyn, Judith Kate, and Drayton Ward, Chelsea, Matthew, Megan, Brianne, Nicolas, Alex, Nichole, Ava Swift, and Will Murphy; one great great-grandchild, Bradley Ward; and a brother, N.W. (Mildred) Smith of Powdersville.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Staite of La Mesa, Calif. and Evora Bridges of Eutaville, S.C.; and a great-grandson, Michael S. Smith.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home with interment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
