Earlene T. Johnston, 75, a longtime Wenatchee resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 with her family at her side.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1927 in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Everett and Alice Wood. She moved with her family to Walnut Ridge, AR, as a young child, where she grew up on a farm and attended school. It was there where she met the love of her life, her best friend's brother, Reed Johnston.

At the age of 18, she moved with her sister to Marietta, GA, during W.W. II. There, she worked for Bell Aircraft Corporation during the war, while her sweetheart was serving our nation. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, Reed moved to Wenatchee to join his family. He had kept in touch with his sweetheart during those four years while he was overseas, through letters. He mailed her a train ticket from Georgia to Wenatchee, asking her to please come to Wenatchee. He told her that if she did not like it here, or no longer had feelings for him, that he would see that she got back home safely. At that time, she made her way to Wenatchee.

On May 25, 1946, she became the bride of Reed Johnston. They were married at Coeur d'Alene, ID. From that day forward, a bond was created that compared to no other. With their bond of love and affection for each other, the birth of their family was created over a period of time. Earlene's family was her priority and the center of her life.

She worked for Montgomery Ward as a retail clerk and for many years worked for Welch Apples as a fruit packer.

Since 1966, she had been an active member of the Wenatchee First United Methodist Church. Because of her strong faith in Jesus Christ, she displayed a caring smile with a gentle spirit in her heart. Throughout all of her adversities, this is where her strength was born.

Earlene was a member of the Wenatchee Golf and Country Club. Golf was one of the many activities she enjoyed. She golfed with both the Nine and Eighteen Hole Groups. Both groups have been a tremendous support to her during the time of her illness.

Earlene and Reed have had wonderful opportunities during the course of their lives together to travel extensively throughout the world, meeting and touching the lives of others. Each trip gave them both a sense of adventure that added passion for those less fortunate. Beauty was found in the simple things, such as a fragrant flower or a colorful sunset.

She is survived by her husband, Reed Johnston, at home; two daughters, Diane Johnston-Boehle and her husband, Bill of Redwood City, CA, and Carol Johnston-Long and her husband, Gar of Wenatchee; four grandchildren, Justin and David Boehle of Redwood City, CA and John and Anna Martin of Wenatchee; one sister, Penny Mullin of Wichita, KS and one brother, Eugene Wood of Greer, SC. She had many nieces and nephews and lots of extended family members who will miss her so much.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Connie Johnston, her parents, Everett and Alice Wood, and a sister, Velma Howard.

Commemoration Services will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2002, 1 p.m. at the Wenatchee First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Tom Eberle and the Reverend Kel Groseclose officiating. Concluding Services and the Interment will follow in the Wenatchee Cemetery. Visitation will be at Telford's, East Wenatchee on Wednesday from 12 noon until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. Friends who wish may make memorial donations to the Earlene Johnston Memorial, Children's Bible Fund, c/o Wenatchee First United Methodist Church.
