Edward G. Etter was born September 1, 1836, the son of Edward G. and Ann Etter.

On October 6, 1862, he married Ann A. Scheible to which marriage there were two sons and six daughters as follows: Emma Eliza, Minnie, Edgar Senseny, Alice Scheible, an unnamed daughter, Ella Alice, S. Guyer and Anna Bertie.

For more than forty years he was a member in good standing of Columbus Lodge, I.O.O.F., and was one of its honored Past Grands. He was one of the eight citizens held by the confederates as hostages for the money demanded of Chambersburg previous to the burning of the town in 1864.
