Rosa Nell Smoot was the sixth child born to Joseph Henry and Rosa Lee Seay Smoot.

She married Raymond Leo King on November 16, 1912.

No children were born to this union.

Nellie always referred to her husband as Mr. King. Uncle Raymond was a conductor for Seaboard Air Line Railway and was killed while doing some extra work for the railroad. Nellie's brother Rufus Carl also worked for Seaboard Air Line Railway and was in the yards when the accident happened. Aunt Nellie had gone to pick up Mr. King from work when Uncle Carl went to her car and told her they would be late and she should not wait - not wanting her to find out about the accident there.

When I was growing up I would spend a couple of weeks during the summer in Richmond and would stay with Aunt Nellie at her residence on Garland Avenue. What I remember most was her great personality, being witty, and very friendly. Also she wore red nail polish and Evening in Paris perfume.

Nellie went to work after the death of her husband at the Medical College of Virginia on the switchboard. Later she worked for the City Police Department as a dispatcher. Nellie was my great aunt.
