FORMER RESIDENT DIES
ULYSSES CANTON, 86, a former resident of our community passed away in Santa Barbara, California, September 12th, 1964.
He was born in Valley Center, Sedgwick County, Kansas on December 9, 1877 to Frank Joseph and Margaret Jane (Dunlap) Canton. The family moved from Sedgwick County with two teams pulling a covered wagon and a spring wagon and reached the Clark County homestead on April 25, 1885. They also brought 21 head of cattle and one pony with them. He lived in Englewood, Clark County, Kansas for many years. He was a stockman and a rancher and also worked as a carpenter for years. He lived in the Englewood Community from 1927 until 1952. Ten years ago he moved to Canoga Park, California.
He is survived by his wife, Erna, and seven children: J. B. Canton of Carpentaria, California; Walter and Edwin of Canoga Park, California; Lee of Salinas, California; Elgin of Guam; Claude of Grand Junction, Colorado; and one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Lucy) Meisner of San Jose, California; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive. (Note: Ulysses (Lissie) Canton was buried in California where a gravesite is found but his wife, Erna , was buried in the Canton Family plot of the Englewood Cemetery, Englewood, Kansas after her death. There is also a headstone for Ulysses located in the Canton Family plot at Englewood, Kansas.
