DEAD AT EIGHTY-FOUR:
Mrs. Christy Ann Roberts died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. W. Oyster, in this city, last Tuesday after a brief illness. She was past eighty-four years of age and the last of a family of twelve children. Funeral services were held from the home yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. Z. McGogney, of the Presbyterian church, and the interment was in the Paola cemetery. Besides Mrs. Oyster, she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Frances Emery, of this city, and one son, Grant Roberts who lives in Colorado.
Mrs. Roberts was born in Sparta, Livingston County, New York, November 2nd, 1825. She located here with her husband in the fall of 1858. This was then Lykins county, K.T. Her husband was one of the central figures in this county during the early days. To the sorrowing relatives, the community extends sympathy.
Linked with the name of Mrs. Roberts are the memories of good deeds. She was a type of those heroic mothers who gave Kansas her greatness and grandeur. She was the counselor and guide of the late John M. Roberts, the sturdy patriot, who left the impress of his strong personality forever upon this county. In the field of industry quietly helping to build a state, asking no reward but the consciousness of duty well done, they went hand in hand, rearing a family, building houses, setting out trees and planting flowers to gladden the pathway of humanity. Mr. Roberts lay down for final rest, giving his body back to dust many years ago. Today he is in companionship with the soul who knew him as none other knew him. As one thinks of Mrs. Robert and of the good deeds entwined with her earthly pilgrimage, the immortality of the soul and Heaven come vividly to mind and he says, "It must be so. The body goes back to earth but the spirit has an eternal existence." Gentle lovable, Mrs. Roberts, good-bye.
