Merle was born the son of Barnard and Emma (Engle)Tritle. He attended school at Palo, Iowa. He worked at Western Auto in Cedar Rapids, Iowa until he purchased a small cafe in Alburnett, Iowa. He married Elizabeth Grandia June 23, 1931 and they made their home in Alburnett. Merle sold the cafe and started doing carpenter work that he continued doing until his retirement. He loved to fish and do woodworking.
