SP4 Lester Howard Clegg was a casualty of the Vietnam war. As a member of the Army, he served our country until February 28th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 25 years old and married. It was reported that Lester died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. Lester was born on August 27th, 1940 in the Upper Little River community of Harnett County, North Carolina. SP4 Clegg is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC; name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 05e, Line 85. He served our country for 4 years.
Frederick Johnson: "I served with him in Vietnam. I was there with Lester the day he was killed. We were ambushed, Lester and LT James George Patzwall, were KIA's and there were others wounded. The day was Feb 28, 1966, I can still close my eyes and see that day. I Pray for Lester's and Lt Patzwall's family."
He is the husband of the late Mrs Alma Clay Clegg, 323 Gary Street, Sanford, NC; son of Mr Jerry Clegg and Elizabeth McDougald, Route 3, Box 286, Lillington, NC; nephew of Mrs Inez McDougald, 14 Channing Street, Washington, DC; brother to Paul Ernest Clegg and Thomas Gene Clegg.
He served as a Light Weapons Infantry assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, USARV.
He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Purple Heart (for his combat related wounds/death), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
