Rufus Carl "Bubba" was the only son born to Rufus Carl and Gertrude Mae Mitchell Smoot. Bubba was seventeen when he joined the US Navy. His father, Carl had to sign for him. Bubba was an apprentice seaman. He played seven musical instruments and was captain in the corps of cadets at Camp Bainbridge Maryland. He was walking back from the field from band practice for a break - started back, got knocked down, some of the guys were running and trampled Bubba, they didn't see him. He received internal injuries. The funeral was a Mormon Service. The bishop said, "In my fathers house there are many mansions" and there will be a place for Rufus. His name is on the Virginia Memorial on the Lee Bridge in Richmond, VA. Rufus enlisted on a Friday, left for boot camp on a Friday, was trampled the next Friday, had his second surgery the next Friday and died on the following Friday.
