Rev. Fr. Edward Aloys Nistler died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, March 20, 2009 at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Bemidji, MN with the Most Reverend, Bishop Michael Hoeppner officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, the 19th from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Blackduck, and one hour prior to the funeral at St. Philips. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Shooks, Minnesota.
Honorary Casketbearers will be all his nieces and nephews. Active Casketbearers will be Michael Nistler, Anthony Nistler, Joseph Radermacher, Matt Dockendorf, Paul Daigle and Edward Daigle.
Fr. Edward Nistler was born on August 1, 1925, the son of George A. and Anna (Mahowald) Nistler. He was raised in Shooks, MN and graduated from Kelliher high School in 1943. He attended St. John's University at Collegeville from 1944-46, and the St. Paul Seminary from 1947-54. He was ordained at St. Ann's Church, Blackduck, Saturday, June 5th, 1954, by the Most Reverend Francis J. Schenk, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Crookston. He read his first Solemn High Mass in St. Ann's Church before an overflow crowd of four hundred persons. Following the Mass, dinner was served by the ladies of St. Joseph's Church, Shooks. After a week vacation, Fr. Ed began his first assignment to the Cathedral Church in Crookston, MN, as Associate Pastor. His career in the priesthood has spanned over many years and numerous locations. He continued as Associate in Crookston for a short time until his assignment as Associate at St. Joseph, Red Lake Falls, where he ministered during 1954-55. In 1955, he was reassigned to St. Peter, Park Rapids, for two years. In the summer of 1957, Fr. Ed took a new position as Associate at St. Joseph, Ada, and St. Lawrence, Felton, where he stayed until 1965. During his final year at St. Joseph s he became Administrator. St. John, Akeley, and Immaculate Conception, Nevis, was Fr. Ed's first assignment as Pastor. He served in the dual parishes from 1965-71. In 1971, he became pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Warren, Minnesota. On June 6, 1979, he was honored on the silver jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood at a 25th Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass. During his years at SS. Peter and Paul, he also took on St. Mary, Radium, from 1971-79, and St. Mary, Euclid, from 1979-81. He left SS. Peter and Paul to take a new position as Pastor of St. Joseph parish in Oslo. As Administrator of St Francis de Sales, Moorhead, he spent only one year, from 1983-84. He then moved to pastor the parishes of St. Joseph, Bagley, Our Lady of Victory, Shevlin, and Sacred Heart, Wilton, from 1984-91. He took his final assignment, returning as Pastor of St. John, Akeley, Immaculate Conception, Nevis and St. Theodore parish in Laporte. He spent six years serving in those parishes until his retirement from the priesthood on July 1, 1997. He lived most of his retirement years in the Rectory of St. Philip's, Bemidji where he helped out from time to time. On June 18, 2004 Father Ed was honored at the church of St. Philip's, Bemidji for 50 years in the priesthood. He had been living at the Villa, St. Vincent, Crookston, MN since 2006. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1544 in Bemidji. Father Ed enjoyed camping, and camping with youth groups. He loved fishing and going on canoe trips.
He is survived by his sisters Catherine (Myron) Radermacher of Wadena, Sr. Ruth Nistler of Little Falls, Lucille Dockendorf of Blackduck and Theresa (Dale) Brummer of The Villages, FL; brother Andrew (Anna) Nistler of Kelliher and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including a niece Colleen Nistler of Thief River Falls, MN, and nephew Fr. Stephen Daigle of Bigfork, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Daigle, Sr. Florence Nistler, brother-in-laws Vincent Daigle and Robert Dockendorf and infant sister Cecelia Nistler.
