William James "Jim" Whitford, age 97, of Cobb, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at the Ingleside Nursing Home in Mt. Horeb. Jim was born on August 25, 1911, in Milwaukee to William Joseph and Bersha (Pyle) Whitford. He was a graduate of the Mineral Point High School.

He married the former Edna Hanson on May 18, 1931 and the couple settled in Cobb. Jim farmed, operated James Whitford Trucking and worked 33 years at the Cobb Canning Company until retiring in 1976. Edna preceded him in death on October 29, 2005.

He was a member of the Cobb United Methodist Church, The Linden Masonic Lodge #206 and served on the Cobb Fire Department. In his younger years, Jim sang all around the area in a Barbershop Quartet.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, William and Bersha Whitford, two sons, Joe Whitford and Larry Whitford in infancy, and a grandson, Bradley Nelson.

Jim is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Leonard) Nelson of Madison, 9 grandchildren, JoEllen (Roger) Uptegraw, Larry (Kelly Stahl) Nelson, Kathy (Marilyn Woods) Nelson, Julie (Ron) Seidel, Jill (Dave) Wiess, Jeff (Janet) Whitford, Jana (Joe) Goetz, Jori (Jerry) Beronja and Jay (Jenny) Whitford, a granddaughter-in-law, Kari Nelson, 29 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, two sisters, Iva Polkinghorn of Cobb and Ada Clark of Colorado City, CO, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Services, as well as Masonic Services were held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at the Lulloff -Peterson - Houck Funeral Home in Dodgeville. Pastor Jack Way officiated. Burial was held at the Calvary Cemetery in Cobb.

Friends called at the Lulloff - Peterson - Houck Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Ingle Living Communities would be greatly appreciated.
