Mazie Luedke: A reader to the end

Editor's note: A Life Well Lived looks beyond the obituary to the memorable times of a Faribault area resident's life.

FARIBAULT — Alice M. "Mazie" Luedke enjoyed a stimulating conversation, her friends say.

Luedke, 94, of Faribault, died March 19 at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home.

"She had a good mind," said May Bottke of Faribault, a friend of Mazie. "A conversation always interested her."

Bottke is a long-time member Faribault's Congregational Church, as was Mazie. She remembers her friend serving on many church committees and singing in the choir.

The strongest memory Helen Sauer of Faribault has of Mazie Luedke is walking down the aisle of the Congregational Church with Evelyn Broberg next to her, dressed in choir robes, and walking with other choir members up to the front of the church to sing. Broberg, 97, died Feb. 26, just shortly before Luedke. Both sang for many years in the church choir.

Larry Luedke of Faribault, Mazie's only son, has no regrets about moving back to Faribault from Arizona in 2001, after retiring from property management, to help his mother as she aged. They moved into an apartment together.

"My mother was my best friend," Larry Luedke said. "She always was my strongest supporter, yet vocal critic, too. I was very fortunate to have her in my life for 66 years."

By late 2007, however, his mother's care needs were such that he could no longer care for her by himself. She went to an assisted living facility, and then a nursing home. He would visit her, often twice a day, bringing her books to read.

"Mother read up until the day she died," Larry Luedke said. "She also always enjoyed reading. But she also liked discussing politics or just about any subject."

He had the forethought to asked his mother, in her last years, all sorts of questions about her life and those of other relatives.

"There's not a thing I can think of that I wished I'd ask her," Larry Luedke said.

His mother graduated from Iowa Fall High School in 1932. Her father was a Methodist minister. Shortly after she graduated from high school, her son said, she told her father she was going to attend Sunday services at different church, one which her friends attended.

"Mother was always a very independent woman," he said.

She moved to Faribault in 1933. She married George F. Luedke in 1937. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1988.

Her son said she was a life member of the Rice County Historical Society, served as a Pink Lady at the original St. Lucas Hospital, was an over 60-year member of the Easter Star, as well as a long-time member of the Congregational Church.
