Paul M. Hockett, 78, rural Union, died Thursday, July 21, 1994, at Valley View Nursing Home Eldora of a stroke.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 25, at Chester Church, rural Union, with the Rev. Rck Schill officiating. Burial will follow in Chester Cemetery, rural Union. Paul Milton Hockett was born September 16, 1915 in rural Union, the son of Ross and Susie (Glenn) Hockett. He graduated from New Providence High School in 1933. He married Romaine Sisson on December 31, 1937, in Des Moines. He farmed his entire life west of Union. He retired in 1978.He was a member of Chester Church, Chester Cemetery Association, the Gideon Society, and ASCS. He was the president of the Hardin County Historical Society for two years and did 2,000 hours of volunteer work at Iowa Veterans Home. He was also a member of the New Providence School Board for 10 years and president for three years.Survivors include his wife, Romaine; two sons, Vernon, Bettendorf, and Ronald, Perrysburg, Ohio; one sister, Mary (Mrs. Willard) Meeker, Huxley; his stepmother, Hester Hockett, Eldora and five grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents.




The following is copied from the book “History of Hardin County Iowa” – 1981:Paul Hockett Family – Paul Hockett, son of Vincent “Ross” and Susie Elizabeth (Glenn) Hockett, was born September 16, 1915 on the Hockett homeplace west of Union, Iowa, in Hardin County, Providence Township. Paul has one sister, Mrs. Mary Meeker. She and her husband Willard live in Huxley, Iowa. Paul received his education in Chester Rural School and New Providence High School, graduating in 1933. In 1936 Paul purchased an eighty-acre farm located in Providence Township (section 26) east of Chester Friends Church from Will and Vada Williams. In December 1937 Paul married Romaine Sisson. She is the only child of Charles and Dora Sisson of rural Conrad, Iowa. Romaine attended school in Conrad, graduating in 1933. To this union was born two sons, Vernon J. in April 1939 and Ronald Lee in June 1942.Vernon attended New Providence High School. He graduated from University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. Degree in music education in 1961. He received his M.A. Degree from Northeast Missouri State College in 1972. Vernon met Linda Jean Kauzlarich while both were attending college in Cedar Falls. They were married in June 1962. Linda is a graduate of University of Northern Iowa with a BA. Degree in elementary education. They have three children: Lori Ann, Joseph Paul, and Gregory Alan. They live in Bettendorf, Iowa where Vernon is an instrumental music teacher in the high school and Linda teaches elementary. They are active in school affairs and are members of Asbury Methodist Church.Ronald graduated from New Providence High School. In 1964 he received a B.S. Degree in chemistry from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. He married Janice Jane Schimmel in November 1967. They have two daughters: Karen Sue and Mary Ann. They live in Perrysburg, Ohio, and Ronald works as a chemist for Libby Owens Ford Glass Co. in Toledo. He has worked there since graduation. Janice worked there as a secretary before her marriage. They are members of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg.Paul and Romaine have enjoyed various civic and community activities. Both have been active in the Chester Friends Church. Paul served on the New Providence school board ten years, being president three years. He has belonged to Gideons about thirteen years presenting the Gideon message in various churches throughout Central Iowa. He is a trustee of Chester Cemetery Association. He has several hobbies, including restoring antique cars. His 1929 Model A Ford is his pride and joy. He has belonged to Marshalltown Area Restorers Club, served on the Agricultural Stabalization Conservation Service Committee ten years, presided as president of Hardin County Historical Society two years, and is co-chairman of the 1981 Hardin County History Book project. Romaine’s hobbies include gardening, flowers and hand crafts. She was secretary for Chester Cemetery Association over twenty years, is a member of Gideon Auxiliary and is an active member of Chester Missionary Society.Paul and Romaine still live on the same farm and are now retired. They have seen many changes in farming during the years since Paul started with three horses.
