She was the daughter of Charles Augustus (1872-1925) and Alice M Woodson (1876-1906) Hammond.

Her siblings: Laura Elizabeth Hammond King (1899-1987) and brother - name unknown (1906-1906).

Velma's father second married: Josephine Herron (1878-1923) in 1907 in Columbus, Bartholomew Co, Indiana.

Soon after their marriage the family moved to Sikeston, Missouri.

Velma's half brother: Charles Davidson Hammond (1910-1994).

In 1913 there was a flood in Sikeston.

The family moved back to North Vernon, Indiana at the end of 1916 or in January 1917.

Velma's father raised horses and had a nice horse farm at the edge of Sikeston. He raised sulky horses, but he also bet on horses. He lost a lot of money and supposedly the farm.

Velma's sister, married in November of 1917. By about January of 1918 Velma, her brother Charles and her step mother Josephine moved to Greenwood, Indiana. Velma's father and step mother separated. Velma, her brother Charles and her mother stayed with Carrie Grace Hammond Ross (sister of Velma's father Charles) Ross and her family for a couple of weeks and then got a place of their own.

Velma went to Greenwood High School. She was on the girls' basketball team. The last six weeks of her senior year she had double pneumonia and didn't graduate with her 1921 class.

Velma's step mother had a restaurant (1918) in Greenwood on Main St just east of Madison Av on the north side of the street. Velma worked there and helped run it.

Velma may have met Earl while she was working at a restaurant in Greenwood when he stopped there on his bus route or when she rode his bus.

Velma married Earl Bryant Harmon (1896-1984) on March 16, 1922 in Johnson Co, Indiana.

Her step mother, Josephine, died in 1923. Her father died in 1925 in Elizabethtown, Indiana - destitute.

Velma and Earl had 10 children: Charles Thomas Harmon; Alice Leona Harmon Dragoo; Mary Kathryn Harmon Davidson Logsdon; Frank Bryant Harmon; Helen Elizabeth Harmon Kissee; Fred nmn Harmon; Nancy Louise Harmon Abbett Million Cobler Ledger; Patricia Ann Harmon; Lois Faye Harmon Warren Hayes; and Richard Lee Harmon.

She was a member of the Ladies' Aid and made quilts. She also collected salt and pepper shakers. As a source of income Velma crocheted baby booties and baby hats and sweaters to be sold at L S Ayres Department Store in Indianapolis. She got about 10 cents for a pair of booties.

In March of 1943 her son, Charles, joined the Marines and left for the Pacific.

Between 1954 and 1962 she workded as a cook at Bab's restaurant which was a part of the Cities Service filling station, Frank, her son, ran the service station.

In the summer of 1962 she became ill. She had gallbladder surgery, but died the next morning of a stroke.

She was a member of the Whiteland United Methodist Church and a devoted mother.

Cause of death: cerebral vascular accident after surgery.

She died at age 59 years 11 months 17 days.
