He was the son of Dr. James Smith Abernathy and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ramsey.

"Selmer, Tenn., Oct 13 - A.K. Abernathy, aged 83 years, died at his home in Adamsville Tuesday. He was a retired farmer and one of the most prominent men of the county. He is survived by his widow, six sons and one daughter, as follows: Drs. Hayes, John, J.S., Wm., H.G., and Miss America, all of this county, and A.K. Abernathy of Memphis, conductor on the I.C.R.R. A.K. Abernathy was a brother of Prof. M.R. Abernathy, one of the leading educators of the state, who died at his home in Selmer in 1900.
