Letter from Carol Barwick Miller (copyrighted to Carol Barwick Miller)

Dear Susan,
My name is Carol Barwick Miller, and I am the granddaughter of Oscar Linton Barwick, son of John J. Barwick, Jr.

Recently my husband started researching the Miller family in Jenkins Co, Georgia, so I decided to look up my family too. My father recently showed me the graveyard where John J. Barwick Jr. is buried. He calls it the Harrell Cemetery, and it is off of Corinth Church Road in Emanuel County. There is another cemetery with that name, I think.

My family on both my father and mother's side have many roots in the Emanuel-Johnson county area, so I have looked at a lot of information, and I grew up about six miles away from my grandfather's farm, so I'm pretty familiar with the names and places. John Jr's widow, Jane Skinner Barwick, lived just down the road from my grandfather when my father was growing up. This was in Emanuel County.

John Jr. had four wives. He died when my grandfather was eight. My father had never known much of the family history beyond John and Jane, his grandparents. John is buried next to Lucy Harrell, who was probably his third wife. Elizabeth Odom was most likely his first wife. My father did not know her name or
any of her eight children with John. His second wife must have been Pheraby Elizabeth Drake. I discovered that she is also my grandmother, Veta Herman Barwick's, great -aunt.

Veta is the daughter of; Mary Selina Drake Herman, daughter of James William Drake. James William Drake is Pheraby's brother. You might be interested to know that Pheraby had four children by a previous marriage to John Nelson Key: James, John Frances ,Eliza Jane, and William Wiley Key.

I have been trying to figure out who Jane Skinner Barwick's family was. Jane was the fourth wife.
I had never heard the first name Ferby before. In the 1870 Emanuel County census I found a Sarah Skinner Webb and her children, James T, 21, Alex M., 19, Phariba J., 16, and Elijah F., 14, Sarah Webb as head of household.

On the Edenfield database I found a John J.Skinner, wife Sarah Elizabeth, with children Zachariah, William N., James T, Alex M, Phariba J., and Elijah Frankling Skinner. This John Skinner was listed as deceased on June 6, 1854.

Your database shows a John Skinner born in 1818 instead of 1821, married to Sarah Beasley, one child, Elijah Frankling. Sarah Webb is listed as buried in the Beasley-Skinner cemetery also has her birthplace as South Carolina. There is a large family of Skinners from Darlington in the 1800's, but I can't place this John. The Barwicks of course were from Darlington. I think that Jane might well be the Phariba from the 1870 census.

My grandfather, Lint, and grandmother were married for 55 years and raised nine children on their farm. My aunts , uncles, and cousins live mostly in Ga, Fla, SC, and NC. My grandfather worked very hard and all the children completed high school or beyond. My grandparents were devout members of Emanuel Church of the Nazarene. Granddaddy was very handsome, with white hair, blue eyes, ruddy cheeks , and the most beautiful complexion I have ever seen on a man in his seventies. My grandmother's father, James Thomas Herman, was of Jewish descent, from Germany, though we don't know much about his background. He was said to have been from Alabama and came to Adrian with the railroad. He also taught school and was a postmaster. He was Mary Selina Drake's second husband, I think. You might want to check the database about this.

You don't have my great -aunt, Veta's half -sister, listed. Selina was married to Wiley M. Key on January 3, 1890, and Lounie Beatrice Key was born on 10-12-90. Also, Veta's little sister Mollie is said to have died at age four, and Selina shortly thereafter. James Thomas Herman died when grandmama was 14, and she then went to live with a Drake uncle. She married my grandfather when she was 16. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE REF HARRELL CEMETERY :
... concerning the Harrell cemetery. It is not the same as Odomville Cemetery. They are about three miles separated (as the crow flies). The Harrell Cemetery records are in my possession and will be posted shortly to the Internet. The Harrell Cemetery is located on Corinth Church Road which is between Adrian-Meeks road and Foskey Road in Emanuel County, Ga. Odomville Church was located on the Adrian Meeks road and was the site of an old Church that burnt in the late 70s.
Sincerely,
