From Grace Bacon Ferrier's book, "Post Oak Sprouts", her cousin Nelson Hancks was enlisted in the US Navy when he died in a train accident in Newburg, Missouri. From her book, Grace's description of Nelson: "He had lived with us one winter and gone to High School in Linn (Missouri). He had carried his books in a leather strap hung over his shoulder. He used the same strap to bring wood in for the cooking. In the evenings, he did Algebra and Shakespeare...He was the one and only person who could bring that old wooden-tubbed washing machine into full play. As Mama said 'he could really make that thing hum'."
