The Rooklidge family moved to Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California by the 1880's and in 1900, Eugene, a typographer and member of the International Typographical Union (ITU), was a lodger in Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington, at the home of Sophia Serfling, her daughter Helen Serfling Judson and Helen's son Chet. Eugene was working at the Tacoma Tribune as a printer.
Eugene and Helen married on December 4, 1900, in Kincardine, Ontario, Canada. They returned to Pierce County where Eugene both homesteaded and worked as a typographer for a newspaper for awhile before leaving for Oregon to farm near Albany, Benton County. The family then moved to Aurora, Marion County, Oregon, in 1912, to work a hopyard. Eugene, worked in a print shop in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, as well as working the farm in Aurora
Eugene was widowed in 1942 and on September 3, 1948, he married Ruth E. Thomas Akers, of Portland, the widow of John "Jack" Foster Akers, and the daughter of J. and Jennie Thomas, in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. Ruth was born in 1894 and died on August 28, 1964. Jack Akers was the son of William Akers and Augusta Smith; and, was born May 14, 1887, Mayville, New York, died December 1, 1946, Portland.
Eugene and Ruth's marriage did not last. The marriage may have been annulled as, on May 21, 1952, Ruth remarried to Oscar A Heizenbuttel, Memorial No. 775678, under the name Ruth Akers, in Vancouver, on May 21, 1952. Oscar was the son of Will and Emma E. Heizenbuttel; he was born in Nebraska in 1904 and died in Multnomah County in 1963.
Eugene had moved to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado, to live in the Union Printers Home, a hospital and sanitorium for ITU members where he died in 1956
