George Walter McKenna, son of the late William and Margaret McKenna, was born Sept. 26, 1870, on the McKenna farm two miles northeast of Oto. With the exception of 13 years, 1907 to 1920, when he lived near Akron, Colo., his entire life was spent in Woodbury County. For several years he farmed near Oto. Retiring in 1925, he purchased and operated the Oto dray line 15 years. Due to ill health he was compelled to give up this work about four years ago, when he sold the business to George Downing.
A few weeks ago he became seriously ill and was taken to St. Joseph's hospital, where he passed away Friday, Dec. 31, of pneumonia. With the passing of George McKenna, Oto residents lost a kind and obliging friend and neighbor. He was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Bays of Sioux City and Mrs. T. J. McDermott of Anthon, and five brothers, Leo J. of Estacada, Ore., Chas. B. of Salem, Ore., Clement P. of Sioux City and James E. and Thomas A. of Oto.
The funeral arrangements were in charge of Perasso Bros., Sioux City. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers included Roy Slentz, Fred Johnk, John Andersen, Bert Ullrich, John Curtin and Don McDonald.
