"Brigadier General Alfred William Bjornstad, native Minnesotan, former commandant of Fort Snelling and chief of staff of America's Second Army in France during the World War, died yesterday at the
San Francisco Presidio's Letterman General Hospital after a long illness. He was 60 years old. One of the army's most distinguished officers, he had lived at San Francisco and Santa Barbara, Calif. since his retirement from active service in 1928. Gaining his first military experience as a member of the Minnesota national Guard, the general served in two wars, was wounded in battle, received many citations and consistently held positions of honor and importance in service of the army. He was commandant of Fort Snelling from 1919 to 1923. Born in St. Paul, October 13, 1874, General Bjornstad was educated there in the public schools, at Luther College, and was graduated with honor from the University of Minnesota in 1896. His first was service was obtained as captain of H company, Thirteenth Minnesota Volunteers in the Spanish-American War. He was severely wounded at the battle of Manila in the Phillipines. Entering the Regular Army in 1901 as a lieutenant in the 29th Infantry, General Bjornstad was military attache to Berlin in 1912 and 1913. Military instructor at the army staff college in 1915 and 1916, he directed 16 training camps for officers of the National Guard in 1917. During the World War heas first chief of staff of the 30th Division and later chief of staff of the Second Army and the Third Army Corps in France. He organized and directed the Army General Staff College in France. He was appointed commandant of Fort Snelling in 1919, and followed his tour of duty there in 1923 by being appointed assistant commandant of the army's infantry school at Fort Benning Columbus Ga. one of the most important appointments in the army. He was co-author of the Infantry Drill Regulations which are read by every soldier in the army. General Bjornstad's many citations included the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, Companion of St. Michael and St. George (British) and the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. Declared one of the most efficient and brilliant commandants ever to lead Ft. Snelling, he was made a brigadier general in 1924 at which time his military record was hailed as one of the best in the army."
