Rev. John Scott Newell, Jr. WEYMOUTH The Rev. John Scott Newell Jr., 82, of North Weymouth, an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene for 54 years, died at home Wednesday, March 25. The founding pastor of North Street Community Chapel in Hingham, he also served Nazarene churches in Dennisport, Harwich and Wareham MA, Richmond MO and Zelienople and Union City PA, and served Evangelical United Methodist Church in Wareham and Community Bible Church in Hopedale. He was ordained on the Pittsburgh Nazarene District. He was a founder of Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore, past president of Interfaith Social Services in Quincy, and a member of Zelienople Rotary Club. He retired in 1991 after teaching math 28 years at Broadmeadows Middle School, Quincy, where he coached football, baseball and soccer. He was a contract negotiator for Quincy Education Association. He joined the Navy on graduation in 1944 from Farmingdale High School on Long Island and attended the V-12 program at Bates College, Lewiston ME and Harvard during World War II. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Louisiana College, bachelor of theology from Eastern Nazarene and master of divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City MO, where he was a candidate for the doctor of ministry. He took education courses in Geneva College, Beaver Falls PA and Edinborough State, and at Simmons. The Rev. Newell and his wife, Dorothy James Newell, were married in 1944 in Greenwich CN. They have five sons, John S. Newell III of West Bridgewater, Kerry J. Newell and his wife Rena Inez of Heuvelton NY, Thomas M. Newell of Weymouth, the Rev. Herb Newell and his wife Carol E. Newell of Weymouth, and Scott Robert Newell of Oakland CA; seven grandchildren, Rachel LeGrand of Pettaluma CA, Andrea Newell Dodds of Canton NY, Kelcy J. Newell of Germantown MD, Locke James Newell of Wharten NJ, Caleb Alger Newell of Heuvelton, and Martin Aaron Newell and Jodi Katharine Newell of Weymouth; and seven great-grandchildren, Amanda Brewer and Mariah LeGrand of Pettaluma, Seanna, Noah and Julian Dodds of Canton, and Corado and Benjamin Ambler of Weymouth. The service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at North Street Community Chapel, 235 North Street, Hingham, by the pastor, the Rev. Jeremy Scott. Visiting is from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to the church. Arrangements were made by McDonald Funeral Homes of Weymouth.
